I had the pleasure of shooting rock and roll tailer Glenn Palmer at his Malibu home aka Tom Petty's estate for this week's LA Weekly. We had a great afternoon and shot in and out of an old airstream. Check my vimeo for a behind the scenes video clip.

This exhibition Rethink LA Perspectives on a Future City which envisions a Los Angeles fifty years in the future. What would LA look like without cars? I shot film this last week and it was so nice to be reunited with my baby- my RZ67. I rarely get the chance, ie. budget to shoot with film anymore . I was asked to be a part of the RethinkLA exhibit that will be happening at the A+D Museum in August. It's going to be a great show including work from photographers, artists and designers. Nathan Apffel

I photographed Nathan Apffel last week for the OC Weekly. He directed Lost Prophets "—Search for the Collective is among the most beautifully shot, well-edited and fully realized movies in this year’s festival, let alone the Action Sports category. It follows eight surfers scattered all over the world, but several Orange Countians are involved in the project. And the waters off Newport Beach inspired the documentary’s director." It will be in the Newport Beach Film Festival running through April 29th.

I met Nathan at Manhattan Beach to shoot a portrait. The only time he could shoot was from 10-noon which is always the worst part of day to shoot, yet alone at the beach with the glaring sun! I went into it with doubts but came out happy getting these shots. I blew out some of the background and whites to focus on him. I wanted to get some more personality/fun shots of him so he did a belly flop into the waves. So rad!

I know its been a while since I've posted here..I've been super busy with work and moving into my new Loft in Downtown LA! (photos to come)
I was hired last weekend to shoot creative, city "POV" shots for LA Marathon. It wasn't my "normal" type of gig but it was exciting none the less. At one point, I was riding my bike up hill with the runners! I probably should of trained for that since my bicycle is a free spirit.. :)
We started shooting at 6:45 am and earlier, and got the whole race and in between moments. I'm posting a few of my over 500 shots here.

Fighter Girls is proud to announce that Debi Purcell, MMA fighter and owner of the popular women's MMA Website, will be on "Celebrity Fit Club" tonight Feb. 22 on VH1. Purcell is a highly rated fighter and grappler who has been on shows such as "Warrior Nation" on MSNBC, "Montel", and just recently in the BBC documentary: "Cage Fighting Women".
Purcell will teach celebrities Bobby Brown, Sebatian Bach from the rock group "Skid Row",Kevin Federline, Shar Jackson, and others some MMA techniques to help them lose weight. Her line of Fighter Girls clothing will also be featured on the show.

Rankin

I'm leaving for London on Wednesday and I just finished backing one of my bags that I'll bring. I had to bring my polaroid cameras and the last 5 packs of polaroid from my fridge. I want to document my trip for the first few days using polaroid. Probably will shoot digital as well. This is a big change for me as well as a big loss for photographers who love shooting with the instant film and pleasure of polaroid. The packs I will shoot with are expired so I'm hoping for some neat color shifts.

I did a photo essay on this year's fair for oc weekly. I hadn't been to the fair in a really long time. It was fun walking around and shooting, people examining, eating the enormous food, and then riding enormous rides. Not so fun seeing the cattle that would later be auctioned off to butchers and then made into beef briskets.

I shot Travis Keller of the infamous Buddyhead.com music gossip site last week for LA Weekly. Issue is out this week.

Dios is one of the first bands on the new Buddyhead label. It was fun shooting them cause I've know Patrick Butterworth for years and used to go see his old band Shoegazer play. Good ol' days..

I met Audrey when I was on a walk around my neighborhood. She was walking slowing down the street and I was checking her and her outfit out from afar. I went up to her and told her I really liked her look and her chucks. She smiled and then I asked if I could take her portrait. She hesitated but I told her again she looked HOT so she obliged. We walked to her guest home and shot a nice portrait of her in front of the home. I will be back next week to give her a 5x7.

Saving the Bees

I got to photograph the Backyard Beekeepers for the OC Weekly, story by Gustavo Arellano. These women go out to peoples homes or places of work and will remove your bee hive without harming the precious bees and at no cost to you! I have always had a slight fear of bees and getting stung, but it all changed during this shoot. I was not frightened at all and the bees were so calm (there I am below in my bee suit). People have very stong opinons on this subject and of course I photographed the other side of the story as well- the exterminator company known as "Bee Busters". I'm back ! Sorry I haven't posted in so long. I was out of town for the holidays and have been neglecting the blog (no hard feelings). So, what have I been up too?...
Here's some recent news- I got an Altpick award in photography single series, the Alternative Pick Deck and foldout comes out early March. Its the image of Sally called "levitate." I'm pretty excited about that.
I have some new tears coming out Feb and March, will post those when it comes.
I am having an art show Feb. 12th at Edgar Varela Fine Arts Gallery downtown LA. It's part of the monthly art and music showcase and will have some good bands as well. Try and come out if you can!
ALSO, just found out Daniel got excepted to Grad School in London, so I may be moving to the UK!!

This is Alison. This shot has inspired me to start a new series- people looking like dolls, robot vs. human. I have a few other photos I've done in the past like these, that I'm really happy with so I think this will be a good and fun personal project.

I had the privilege of photographing and meeting an amazing woman and amazing cause recently for the OC Weekly. Mary Jo Frawley is a RN who travels to places like Sri Lanka, Somalia, Mexico, and Angola caring for refugees. I met her in Santa Monica beach on a Friday morning at the Faux refugee camp they set up to bring awareness to their cause. She was shy and not used to getting her picture taken. She kept telling me "It's not about me, its about all the people I meet and get to work with." She is such a sweet hearted person. I shot the cover and inside portraits for Less of Mor for this week's issue of the OC Weekly. It was fun to get out of my realm and do a still life. I used to shoot still life every once in a while back in school and really loved doing them. I hardly get the chance to do that anymore, so this was fun. The art director took the outlines I did of the plates and used them on the type, which came out pretty cool. Thanks Kelly!

a group of photo friends and I have been giving each other creative assignments to shoot as an outlet from shooting work related jobs. Last weekend I shot Sophia doing random things around her house. she looks so small on top of that roof, doesn't she?

The Submarines

I shot last week's music issue cover of the LA Weekly, the band The Submarines. Also got to go see them perform live at the Wiltern with the Brazilian Girls. They are so talented and Blake has an amazing voice. Check them out if you haven't heard them. I'll post tears soon.
